I just saw a rescue saying they wont adopt young dogs to old people because theyll die and the rescue doesnt want to take the dog back. While I get the idea, I was mortified at the way they said it. Also, a lot of old people spoil their dogs so I feel like rescues should be willing to accept the dog might come back in exchange for a loving home (in some circumstances).

I'm in greyhound (retired racer) adoption. Our dogs never come with sob stories and if we get a dog back whether it's because the owner passed away, became ill, moved, had a baby, got a divorce or whatever, we just rehome it. That's the whole point. We're their safety net no matter what.

I would rather hear a rescue talk about how they handled a dog being returned and used that as a learning experience to attempt to match dogs better in the future

I foster cats on my own and I always take the animals I rescue back. I'm not a rescue but I guarantee my babies a good life. not a home but a good life. they will live out their life with me versus going to a shelter or rescue

in Western Australia we had a shelter flat out took back a dog from his adopted family all because they found out he was slepiny outside at night but was still socialising with the family his name is Oakly the Boxer mix.

Or a humane society that calls themselves a no-kill rescue, but they make people have an appointment for a surrender interview & make them wait 48 to surrender as policy to reduce surrenders. Which they admit forces people to go to the shelter because many times they can’t wait, plus they evaluate the pet for adoption potential, then send the unadoptable dogs to the local shelter knowing they will be euthanized. So how is they labeled a no-kill humane rescue?

Or when the owner of the rescue slanders a foster for not being able to foster a dog because it’s been with them for a year with no help with food, vet care, housing, ect..

I was about to get kicked out of my apartment and a got death threat because my dog had severe separation anxiety which was not disclosed to me, and the rescue was entirely unhelpful and tried to guilt me because they are foster based and no longer had the foster room to take her back. I will NEVER recommend that rescue.

I adopted a cat from a rescue. It was my second cat and I have 3 dogs. My dogs get along with the first cat great. NO ONE got along with the second cat. I gave it time but they bullied the second cat so bad his personality changed from being the friendliest loveliest cat to hiding 24/7. I had the cat for a year before I contacted the rescue and said it’s just not a good fit. We loved him but nothing we did made it better and the cat was suffering because of it. They took the cat back but belittled me and made me feel like trash about it. Then they said I was banned from ever adopting or fostering from them again and they were going to give my name to other rescues to make sure I couldn’t foster or adopt for anyone in the area…..

there's a rescue/shelter near me that bashes breeders. saying theres no such thing as "good/reputable breeders" and even purebreds end up at their rescue. made me really think that if these breeders are truly reputable, the dogs wouldn't end up in a rescue/shelter. we signed a contract with our breeder for our golden that if we chose to get rid of her, under any circumstances, they automatically get her back, and they will try and rehome her or keep her. I will never adopt from said rescue I was talking about, simply for the blatant bashing and not being properly educated. I've seen a lot of their dogs they do adopt out get returned as well. 🤷🏼‍♀️

every shelter around where I live does this, every single one.. "returned no fault of their own, the adopters felt...." It evokes emotions, loosens the purse strings and does encourage people to foster. Right or wrong, its a strategy.

Most of the time it’s a high energy breed of dog that they mislabeled so “they’d have a better chance at being adopted” and they allowed the dog to be adopted out blindly to the adopters who fell for their trap

Shelters in general are scams and making millions off the adopt don’t shop movement. It’s sad and our purebreds are suffering!

Yes. Been saying this for years. They should reclaim no questions asked and consider what’s in the best interest for the dog going forward. Including interviewing the prior adopters fully about the dogs needs any behavior because it may help with more successful placement knowing the dogs needs.

Meanwhile, when my mom had dementia & lived in a home she convinced her helper to take her to the animal shelter. That helper texted me while they were there. I called the shelter to tell them NOT to allow her to get a cat. Bc she couldn’t care for the cat, she was also abusive to the last cat, that she lived in a care facility. They still gave her a cat 😳 then wouldn’t take it back after it left their facility

Several years ago I had a guy walk in with an old dog that he just adopted 7 days prior that bit his kid apparently unprovoked, in the face. He told me this dog was 2-3 years old according to the rescue. This dog was at least 10-13 years old with arthritis! They had never had a dog before. I told them to take it back to the rescue, they wouldn’t take it back because it bit!!!! They weren’t comfortable keeping the dog in the home anymore for obvious reasons and had to euthanize this dog and take him in for rabies testing. That dog should NEVER been adopted out to that family and that shelter should have absolutely taken that dog back! I called them and gave them a piece of my mind for that. 😡

had to return a resource guarding, attaching little dog after a year of trying. they flagged me as an animal abuser. she was not labeled as being aggressive or anything. I spent so much time and money on trainers too 😢

Well, I agree with you 95% there is a very small percentage of people who do some real nasty stuff that most definitely should get called out. But yes, I would much rather someone feel comfortable returning one of our babies, then feel nervous at the thought of being exploited.

if only 95% of shelters that only work in r+ would use balanced training, many of these dogs wouldn't be returned. 30+% of sheter dogs are returned within the first 6 months and it's usually due to behavioral issues.

And the majority of the time these shelter dogs get returned because of the shelter! The dogs have behavioral problems that are not fixed and or told.
