@willfrancis24: The Signs of AI Writing - Wikipedia just published a guide to spotting AI-generated writing, and it's the best one on the internet. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and the other AI chatbots (LLMs) still write in a predictable way, with lots of cliché phrases and words, as well as little text formatting quirks that give it away. #ai #chatgpt #chatgptprompts #techtok #chatgpt5 #aitools #technology #artificialintelligence #chatgpttips #aiwriting #llm #llms
"and then he said that the signs of AI use is literally every single thing you’re meant to do in academic writing"

Helpful as writing assistants and for writing prompts. It’s silly not to read through and change into a tone more representative of the author 🤦🏽♀️

Jane Austen also used AI. Em dashes have been found in her books

For those that learnt English as a second language the points Wikipedia compiled are basic characteristics of their writing style even when they don't use GenAI. If you pull international scholarship application essays from before 2020 from those that are not native speakers, you'd find all these there.

What You Say in English! :
This is basically a guide of the language that we use in ESL/EFL writing courses, especially when prepping students to sit exams like Cambridge English Advanced, Proficiency or IELTS. This would be quite unfair to non-native learners who learn to write like this.

I find this hard to believe at this point. When ChatGPT first rolled out, as a writer myself, the structure and flow felt "weird", but now I can tell you it sounds so human. It's think we're just used seeing mediocre writing that most people get surprised when they come across good writing—which I have seen quite a lot! I have seen news where students who didnt use AI were flagged that they did, and they found it frustrating and all. AI copies us, so it's not surprising that it will sound like us at some point. I think we should admit that as time goes, we will NEVER be able to tell the difference between human writing and AI writing.

we have been using emojis for bullet points before ai existed. I also use em dashes often, that's just my style. Should I change it just because people will think I'm ai?!

It's absolutely incorrect to say that quotation marks are always straight. It depends on the font you are using. I ALWAYS use curly (aka "smart" or "directional") quotation marks because they are standard in publishing and are the style required if you you follow Chicago or APA style.

Funnily enough, the AI made the English language more interesting, richer and colourful; which is how (almost) any other language sounds.
Yet, using short and boring sentences is considered a "proper, non AI" 😐

I often use/used “In this section/chapter/paragraph, we’ll discuss” in my writing. It’s not fair to mark such stylistic cliches or phrasing’s as signs of ai writing.

Emdashes are incorrectly used in AI writing. Emdashes—when used in proper writing—do not have spacing between words.
