Excellent insight! You very eloquently described the visceral hate I have been witnessing not just in the booktok community but society as a whole. Just as you mentioned, there is no longer a middle ground when it comes to taste and opinions. Not only is it harmful for personal mental health to hold so much unwarranted anger for something or someone but it creates really serious divides in people.

I was recently looking up a restuarant on Yelp and was taken back by a horrendous scalding review with no real basis and went to the reviewers page and 75% of her reviews were the same I couldn’t believe she goes through life trying to put businesses down for fun.

To some degree I agree with the article. Authors should not be forced to be media personalities. I respect authors like Ferrante who don’t rely on their personality to sell books. That being said, Ocean is a talented author.

What you said in this video is so important, the vitriol is really out of hand, especially in the art/cinema/literary space which is subjective, everyone will have different experiences with these things and it’s crazy when people treat their opinions as facts in that way. I’m so sad for Ocean!

I thought the LRB piece was harsh critique but grounded in text. The discordia review piece felt like a knife fight. Felt like the author thought Vuong needed to be punished or something.
