I'm native level fluent in Japanese and I study Chinese every day, American in Japan since 1997: The more I study Chinese, the weirder Japanese is. In Chinese, each character has only one pronunciation and is one syllable. If it's the name of something in another language, there's an approximation of the pronunciation in Chinese characters, nothing like katakana. But in Japanese it's hard to know how something should be pronounced which we're unfamiliar with, even for native speakers. So place names in Chinese characters for example, if the Japanese speaker doesn't already know how it is pronounced they very likely will get it wrong, but in Chinese there's only one way to say it.
