This response has become a predictable ritual, marked by a refusal to engage with policies like universal background checks or assault weapon bans, citing Second Amendment rights or arguing that "guns don't kill people, people do." Yet, this focus on mental health as a primary cause is undermined by a stark dissonance: many of these same actors support or enact policies that cut funding for mental health services, leaving systemic issues unaddressed. The irony is palpable when mass shootings occur—condolences are issued, mental health is scapegoated, but the cycle of inaction persists, with little effort to bridge the gap between rhetoric and meaningful policy solutions.
