Demyelination: the loss of the protective myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve fibers. Nerve Hyperexcitability: The abnormal electrical impulses can occur spontaneously or be triggered by normally innocuous stimuli such as touch, cold air, or chewing causing sudden and severe pain characteristic of trigeminal neuralgia. 4. Structural Abnormalities: Other structural abnormalities, such as tumors or cysts, can also exert pressure on the trigeminal nerve and cause trigeminal neuralgia. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: 1. Trigeminal Nerve (Cranial Nerve V) It is divided into three branches: a. Ophthalmic Branch (V1): supplies sensory information to the forehead, scalp, upper eyelid, and the bridge of the nose. b. Maxillary Branch (V2): supplies sensory information to the lower eyelid, cheek, upper lip, and upper teeth. c. Mandibular Branch (V3): innervates the lower lip, chin, lower teeth, and the muscles involved in chewing, such as the masseter and temporalis muscles. 2.
