NSW, "public mischief" (Section 547B of the Crimes Act 1900) refers to the offence of knowingly making a false statement or representation to a police officer that calls for a police investigation. The punishment can include up to 12 months imprisonment and/or a fine of 50 penalty units (which is $5,500 as of 2023). The charge can also be laid if the false information is given to a third party who then communicates it to the police.
