Food Safety Consultant here - Best Before Date is on food kept at ambient and have an extended shelf life - they ‘do not go off’ but the quality will decline the further beyond the BBD you go but shouldn’t cause illness. A Use By date is on food with a shorter shelf life that need to be stored chilled, these products are not safe to eat after the Use By Date. All these dates are determined by the manufacturer through extensive shelf life testing. Enjoy.

Best before date is the food will taste better before that date but it’s still edible. Use by date means a food needs to be really used by that date and it could be dangerous. But smelling and looking at it will tell you if it’s gone off.

I believe best before is when the product is at its best but is still edible after the sell by date whereas I believe if it says to use by then it’s not worth eating after the use by date

Best Before can be fine for absolutely fine for literally years! Use By is the one you don’t mess with. There are websites that sell food that’s past its BB date. Only issue is that some foods can lose their flavour or not be quite at their best.

I eat loads a stuff out of date...I hate waste...my other half throws so much out cos of dates but he never knows I cook him loads of out of date stuff haha!...haven't killed him!x

theyre probably all best before dates so theyre totally fine to eat. if theyre use by dates then theyre not safe to eat but generally cupboard bits are all best before

If it’s a best before date it’s fine. Fruit and veg should be a display until date. I save food from landfill for a food surplus charity and what gets thrown away for no good reason is beyond shocking x
