Anders, why did you blow up the chantry?!?! Grand Cleric Elthina was going reign Meredith in ANY DAY NOW. It’s already been a decade, but she was so close!

Yep. The writers have no understanding of real life revolutions. It’s so annoying to see liberal centrism win in all these stories .

man i wish there was a better way for two sides discussion but i will say this: that is genuinely the western white ideal of how progression works. history is taught in a way that "we gloriously brought civilisation to the world and invented freedom and abolished slavery just because we were so nice. it seinply took us 2000 years so you have to wait a bit for more". i have written entire essays on its reflections directly in Arcane and other Runeterra stories, but tiktok isnt exactly the place to write textwalls😅

The mage Vs templar choices bother me in DA - I feel like they shouldnt be treated as equal options? I'm not saying baldur's gate is perfect but I appreciate that it lets you be truly diabolical. You can choose to make life worse for everyone in personal quests and in the end you can side with the bad guys. And its explored accordingly. I wish that DA treated siding with the templars as the "evil" route and let you be evil and corrupt. It can be a nuanced and complex exploration of what that means and have murky grey morality in the mix but i would love if they just. Committed to being like "You're siding with the ruling power/upholding the system and need to grapple with the implications with that."

I love how almost universally the watchers of Arcane didn't buy into the bothsides-ism of Piltover oppressing Zaun. Oh, Cait's mom exploded? womp womp.

I feel this so hard with how blood magic is used whenever they wanted to be like “wellllll look, the mages actually are dangerous.” It undermined any point they were trying to make (if any) about oppression.

Silco getting power is NOT a good thing for the ppl of Zaun, he literly does child labour...
Vi says it out loud that she suffers while trying to get to Jinx, the lex scene is her chosing herself over her obsession with protrcting Powder.
For Jinx it has to be Ekko who saves her and vica versa, he knew her at every point of her life while others only got snippets.
ATLA is right there why does it always have to be Arcane?

Have you played the Valkyria Chronicles games? Hearing this view of oppression in Arcane and DA, I'd be curious to hear your take on VC and how the oppression of Darcsens is handled in that franchise.

the fact one of DA writers (Gaider i think) said that they were surprised so many people preferred siding with the mages 😭

I crashed out so hard at the end of DA2 because of the "both sidesing" the whole thing, and checked out almost all of DAI. I felt like I had to defend Anders, even though I didn't think he was right in doing it (not because I'm a bleeding heart for the chantry, but bc its accelerationist and the elves and mages would just take the brunt of the consequences)—all because I didn't want to buy the whole "both sides" narrative.
and they retconned the elves once ALL having a connection to the fade (in DAI) and then piled on in DATV making them the og colonizers 😒

Something I really love about Andor because it takes certain characters on the opperssors side to the point where they get it and go “nope too late”

This why I cheer for characters like Jinx, Saw Gerrera, and Alabaster (Broken Earth). Even though they were broken by the oppression they suffered, they did the things that needed doing to bring down the oppressive order.

Ay yo why is dragon age in this convo XD.
All dragon age did was escalate there was never a "We can work it out" moment with the mages, templars, darkspawn or tavinter 😂

I feel the problem is (in some cases) is that the writers WANT to tell a story about the oppressor vs the oppressed, but the higher ups do not allow them to choose a side as it will leave potential fans upset a "correct" side was held. Riot with Demacia's whole shit about mages.

It’s always the lack of build up- like if they fought for years and minds were changed over time. Yes- makes sense. But you’re so right. The “immediate” “oh we should give them rights” never makes sense.

A lot of video games use centrism because they need to make both options valuable to the player

Idk with the arcane example because it wasn’t a “just wait and you’ll be free” moment it was resistance exhausting oppressors into surrendering ruined by a galvanising act. Like they weren’t just sitting there hoping they were doing things to get piltover to that point they had to act to get there.
