💙Busy zoom meeting with Jocelyn Harding Dental Hygienist and members from Mouth Cancer Foundation Support Group. Talking about excitement with returning to work. Sodium triggers a friend’s lymphoedema. She has steroid injections into her flap which started 3 months after her scans. Quite a bit of talk from friends regarding painful spasms in necks. One friend in particular struggling with this and Botox has been suggested for this…monitoring until next appointment and Botox is available to her through the NHS. With lymphoedema, exercises really help as does with the tongue exercises…huge value in doing exercises which are for life. Varied response to a question about whether patients should have speech therapy during radiotherapy, every patient is different with how they cope. Using a mouth guard…part of denture was filed off to help with wearing a mouth guard at night. It was suggested to build up with lengths of time as you would with getting used to contact lenses. Joss showed denture brushes after being asked about them. Saliva products were discussed, pastilles and Salagen tablets. Anxiety and panic attacks are very real and on the increase. Collarbone tapping was talked about as I know how much I have benefited from this. Talk of how some family members don’t acknowledge how slow recovery is and that we don’t go back to the “old” version of us. We are still adapting to our new version which takes time. Activity levels are not the same. We are emotionally battered. Words of encouragement from all. 7 weeks after a biopsy a friend got results of possible lichen planus. Erosive lichen planus is very different to regular lichen planus. This friend will gain access to the PBM at another hospital. Another friend advocated for herself, contacted PALS and received a response straight away. Another friend told us about “Patient Voice” which is a feedback form through the NHS patients can fill out to improve services. Also mentioned was the Quality Of Life Assessment. Also asked members to look at a post within our private support group from a clinical ambassador, regarding feedback on an Oral Health Booklet for care of patients going through this medical pathway 💙 #headandneckcancer #support #MentalHealth #itsgoodtotalk #itsgoodtolisten @MouthCancerFoundation
