@suttersfortshp: We are often asked if we are capable of making something sharp in the blacksmith shop at Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park. We normally stick to more utilitarian items and tools that are dull. However, we got to the point with this one. In this video, Mark demonstrates the same blacksmithing methods available in the 1840s at the Fort by making a blacksmith knife (where the entire finished knife is one piece of steel) from a section of flat stock. The bellows pumps air into the forge where the iron or steel is softened to a working temperature to be shaped with a hammer on the anvil. Want to see the the blacksmith shop in operation? Come visit during our Demonstration Days on the third Saturday of each month from 10am to 4pm. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park is a California State Park located in the Midtown Sacramento, California. #suttersfort #castateparks #sactiktok #sacramento #museum

Is the twist just for decoration or does it add structural support to the handle

Some of the most satisfying black smithing I’ve ever seen, I’m not sure why, maybe because I entirely get to see the metal warp to where he wants it over time from the sped up hammering. Either way it looks really dang fun

Whats the point of the hide hammer? Is it like a rubber mallet to prevent damaging or warping the metal too much?

What department of parks would “super epic blacksmith” even be??? Are you in interpretive? Visitor services? I doubt it would fall into maintenance or peace officer?
