I test the thinness of my paints by seeing if they retract back into itself when I brush it on a paper plate

It also helps to have a paper towel to drain excess water from your brush just in case, or else your layers lose control because of how runny it gets.

you can use water or preferably acrylic paint extender this extends the drying time of the paint and additionally makes it more translucent giving you a longer paint and blending time.
