400$ for the device, another 200$ minimum for the hard drives. Then power costs are probably 30$ per year. Compared to 60$ a year on the onedrive family plan with 6TB of storage. You will be even in 20 years only if the hard drives never fail.

HDD drives should be discountinued. My super ultra modern 4TB WD HDD fell form a table (not a tall table) and never ever worked again. I changed all my HDDs for NVMEs.

If one of the drives fail you can just replace it. The files will be safe. Not unless all the drives fail at the same time which it's almost impossible.
