Akame is the main character. Tatsumi is the link for the audience to relate to. the entire thing is incredibly character driven narrative, with so many perspectives interacting with each other. it kinda tricks you into thinking Tatsumi is the hero going through the heroes journey, which is why I think his death hits so hard in the anime, because if you remove Tatsumi, the plot would be exactly the same, just different outcomes and character interactions.
