i grew up this way and knew it wasnt right. then i slowly watched everyone around me follow the same silly idea of running off and being alone somewhere "better." in reality, it just leads to isolation, depression and paranoia of others even if u enjoy ur life most of the time (with exception of if u lived someplace dangerous/depraved before). everyone kind of hates each other now and very few people want to make the sacrifice of sticking around. i stuck around but still, everyone moved away anyway and i hear them complain a lot realizing its impossible to maintain the same family bond. having family around is also how u get secure, confident kids (and also help for the adults raising them). just so silly, i cant....

I live across the street from my mom and stepdad. It’s amazing but we have a very healthy relationship.

I'd be curious about the make up of the study participants in the US and why they chose Ghana and Philippines. Either way, this seems pretty obvious to me, and it's my experience that the people (especially millenials and children of immigrants) living far from family is likely because they wanted to create that distance for their own mental health. we learned early that we can't depend on family and part of why we end up in isolation is because that feels safe. I personally do know my neighbors names and say hello but that's the extent of it.
