@lamour_cloete: On this Heritage Day, I wear my story. The crown upon my head speaks of the Khoi, whose spirit flows in my blood, guiding me with dignity and pride. The earth-toned colors of my attire echo the roots of my Khoi and San ancestors, a reminder that neutrality can hold the richness of history. Yet, as a Coloured South African, my story is a book consisting of many chapters. The shorts I wear nod to the Boers — settlers who, too, became part of my lineage many years ago. Upon my feet rest brown leather shoes, the very style once worn by the Nama uncles whose footsteps shaped the lands I walk dayly. And in my hand, I carry my great-grandfather’s herder’s stick — not just a symbol of labour, but of legacy, guidance, and resilience. I am not just one chapter of history.
