@vintage_bubble_gum: Coming off a magical year in which Mark McGwire broke baseball's single-season home run record with 70 long balls in 1998, Mark McGwire was having another outstanding campaign in 1999, with 28 home runs heading into the All-Star break. During the 1999 All-Star Game Home Run Derby, McGwire put on a show, hitting 13 first-round home runs and setting a then-single-round record. At one point, as flashbulbs popped, the slugger connected on 5 consecutive home runs, with many of the blasts completely clearing Fenway Park. Although Ken Griffey Jr. won the three-round competition, McGwire's bombs are still remembered today. McGwire's Home Run Derby momentum continued throughout the second half of the season, as he hit 37 more long balls, finishing the year with 65. He also hit his 500th career home run in early August. 👉 Join me in wishing “Big Mac” a happy 62nd birthday! Those eyes are why roids shouldn't keep him out. Man was a pure hitter. Locked in like a superhero. Steroids can't do that. Did he hit a few further than he would have? Sure. But they still would've gone out.
