That tab thing you talked about is the tang, you want that to run the entire length of the handle. It’s the only part that connects the blade to the handle and is arguably the most important part

ya need to dissipate the heat better those blue spots means your holding way to much heat when grinding when metal gets that hot ur moving metal not grinding it try working in spots and go back and fourth on those spots to keep even heat. but I followed ya cant wait to see the progress!
