It's torture. You work harder to be loved by them or get some crumbs of love by them, thinking it will fix the relationship someday with your efforts and it will work out, but it only pulls them away further because it doesn't work like that for them and they get very overwhelmed. You try to get used to the avoidance but it's so physically and psychologically painful and debilitating. The worst thing is having to accept that you have to let go. But it's for the best of both.
