@depopdrama: Shoppers were left baffled after an M&S worker was spotted carrying a bag of “free” food, sparking questions over how it was obtained. Some wondered whether the items had been marked down or genuinely given away, as the incident comes amid scrutiny of the retailer’s waste practices. M&S has faced criticism in recent months for discarding unsold food rather than donating it to food banks, adding fuel to the debate over corporate responsibility and food waste. #mands #FoodTok #supermarket

As a worker from m&s. At the end of a late shift there’s loads of items that go out of date that day and your allowed to take it home for free as you otherwise they get thrown in bin

it's because it's expired food that's why it's discounted to begin with so it goes in the garbage or it goes home with someone

Well done to M&S allowing staff to do this- if it was going to waste (I know they donate to food banks too) folk need to stop moaning.

As a ex M&S worker, the food you get from work sometimes is the only food you can get that month… especially when I was a student in London barely making ends meat, people shouldn’t judge.

Ex M&S worker here - I don't believe this was free personally as in my experience working in the deli with about 20+ rotisserie chickens at the end of the day, I was told that they had to be binned as leaving them for staff would be counted as theft. 🙃 The manager wanted them in the bins instead, no option to donate to food banks either.

As an employee. Food bank workers are meant to come every day to collect expiring goods. It’s all expiring that day so then employees can take the rest. I’ve also worked here 3 years and never taken as much as she got to she probably got rlly lucky one shift. Imo I think it’s a great bonus of working there and a much better alternative to wasting food. Even with this policy a lot of food is wasted each day. It’s just the downside of supermarkets.

it's called waste. everything is reduced and put on the shelves when it's going out of date for customers. once the store closes instead of throwing it the store offers it to the staff as they are not allowed to take reduced items from the shelves when working.

I understand people want companies like M&S to donate to food banks but food banks only "usually" accept food with long shelf lives eg - cans, cereal, shelf milk, pasta. Most of the food in this video is fresh and has a very short life span, additionally if its at a discounted price (yellow sticker) it means it expires soon so donating it to a food bank would be pointless! M&S do too good to go bags, in my area atleast, but it would be merely impossible to give away every single yellow sticker item.

Alot of people have no idea what they are talking about. Alot of supermarkets do donate to charity, or the animal food chain. Alot of these items will go in the bin if not collected. Often its not collected. These aren't long shelve items they are used by dates, its take it home or its going in the bin which is such a waste. Used by is fine if you are at home. Supermarkets cannot pass things on past the used by date, so at the end of the shift if its not sold reduced, its not been collected, staff take it and anything else is binned.

Most of the M and S workers are on minimum wage- why can’t they have this as a nice little ‘perk’ of the job?

As someone who used to work for M&S, 9 times out of ten the charity would never show up to collect the food! So it was offered to the people on the late shift before being binned!
