Shonen soul :
Do you need a sword Thorfinn? A sword is a tool meant to kill. What do you need it for? Who's life are you attending to take? Uhh enemies. Your enemies? Who are they? Well bad guys like Halfdan. Listen to me my son. You have no enemies. The truth is that no one has them. No one in this entire world deserves to be hurt

#NBA #basketball #DenverNuggets #panathinaikos ☘️ The Denver Nuggets traded backup center Dario Sariç to the Sacramento Kings for center Jonas Valančiūnas in what was one of their many roster moves this off season designed to retool the team in the wake of their Western Conference Semi-Finals exit to eventual champion OKC in seven games. Most people liked this trade (including me) because it brought over a proven backup on a team friendly contract ($10.4m with a team option next year) who averaged 10/7/2 in his 13th year in the NBA. But then, news broke that Jonas did NOT want to play for Denver, and instead was in advanced negotiations to sign a 3 year deal with European powerhouse Panathinaikos Athens. What the hell? What the helly? Let’s dig in to why a 13 year vet in Jonas Valančiūnas would all of a sudden turn down an opportunity to play with 3x MVP Nikola Jokic on a team that will be one of the most favored teams to win it all. The news took the Nuggets by surprise, as they don’t have a backup plan to Jonas at center, and there was a serious run on the center position in free agency. A European redditor explained that this is really not about the Nuggets, as much as it is about money. Panathinaikos tried to get Jonas last year, but failed when the Pelicans signed him to a 3 year $30.2m deal then traded him to the Kings. The Kings then traded him to the Nuggets. 4 teams in a year! With Jonas said to be fed up with the “losing culture” of certain NBA teams, it’s not surprising that discussions with Panathinaikos ramped up again. The issue is the Nuggets have a team option for next year, and Jonas would likely be a cap hit, cut and encouraged to come back at a vet minimum (if at all). Panathinaikos is said to be offering him 3 years and $13m deal, fully guaranteed deal to play in Athens, with a new stadium and a stacked roster. When you calculate taxes on Jonas’ American contract and compare it to what the Greek team is offering him? He may actually pocket more money in Europe. In addition, Jonas’ home country Lithuania is a 3 hour fight from Athens, and the EuroLeague schedule is MUCH easier than the NBA. So there are logical reasons for him to turn down a back-up role in Denver, where he’d be not only playing behind Jokic but sharing time with center DaRon Holmes, Denver’s first round pick last year who missed the year with injury but is healthy now. European basketball site BasketNews summed it up: “Jonas Valanciunas wants to leave the NBA—and the Denver Nuggets—primarily because of a longer guaranteed deal from Panathinaikos Athens, his desire to play a major role on a title-contending team, frustration with playing for NBA teams without a winning culture, and personal reasons.” He’ll get a chance to win at Panathaniakos, because he’ll play along 6 former NBA players: Kendrick Nunn, Jerian Grant, Cedi Osman, Juancho Hernangomez, Omer Yurtseven, and Lorenzo Brown. The Denver Nuggets could theoretically hold Valančiūnas hostage, but that’s not going to happen. You don’t want an unhappy player on your roster, and you can’t get the full MLE you’d get if you buy him out (likely at no cost). It’s the same situation Sasha Vezenkov was in last year when he was traded by the Kings to the Raptors, and then told Toronto he didn’t want to play. They released him at no cost, he signed with Olympiacos, and the Raps got cap relief. A move to Europe makes sense for a player with 13 years of NBA experience (you need 10 to get the maximum NBA pension). It puts Jonas in a position to win championships, get paid more, and be closer to home without the brutal travel of a full NBA schedule (the Nuggets project to play 100 or so games next year). As for the Nuggets? They get the full MLE and will be looking very closely at … Al Horford.
