I had a teacher who said that if you couldn’t find at least three reasons for any historical event, you weren’t really understanding what was going on. We want to funnel everything into a single cause, but it simply doesn’t work that way.

I find it funny that Methodism uses only 25 Articles of Religion because John Wesley thought the 39 were too Calvinist 😂 Tbh that and the Athanasian Creed are two of the main reasons I’m UMC instead of TEC

Henry was not a reformer and in fact was recognized by the Pope as a Defender of the Faith for arguing against Luther. He viewed himself as a Catholic just not a Roman Catholic. He wanted an annulment and loved the argument that he would have the highest authority over the Catholic Church in England.

How did the Church of England come to forbid divorce? All I really know about it comes from watching films about the royal family.

Great explanation. 👌 From an historical perspective it’s also interesting to understand why the then Pope wouldn’t give an annulment. Because Catherine was a favoured relation to Charles V of Spain, and the Pope was terrified of upsetting Charles for fear he would march on and sack Rome for a second time.

Is it hard having King Charles as the head of your church though? The still present tie to the British monarchy would be a genuine struggle for me. Want to let you know my question is in good faith. It is something I have thought about as a woman who looked into becoming a priest once.

What I tell people is that Henry, Edward, and Elizabeth weren’t even unique in using the Reformation as a cover for expanding royal authority and power. Plenty of other rulers in Europe used the Reformation as an excuse to seize church property, land, and wealth and transfer it to themselves.

Ppl ignore that the Papacy itself was politically compromised, it had to rubberstamp Charles V after his invasion of Rome. If it weren't for Charles' obstruction bc Catherine was his aunt, Henry probably would've gotten the annulment

The way I remember learning it it’s almost a toss up between Henry using the reformation as an excuse for an annulment and Cranmer using the annulment refusal as his closing argument in years-long campaign to convince Henry to bless reformation

I sometimes wish people would look into the history of the church Martin Luther is only one figure in the reformation Jon Huss was another way way before Luther and are schism not a protest in reality lol just putting it out there. I think king Charles would return to Catholicism if he could.

One of the problems you didn’t mention was all the money that was flowing to Rome from every Catholic country. Peter’s Pence, I believe they called it. Many monarchs needed a way to stop the bleeding.

Henry VIII fought against Lutheranism and Pope Leo X gave him the title "Defender of the Faith" in 1521 which has been passed down to later British monarchs.
