And not everyone can even get benefits. Seven years ago, my partner was laid off from his job of nine years. While he searched for another job and waited for his first paycheck, we tried to apply for assistance but we didn’t qualify. Why? Because we owned a two year old Toyota Corolla. It was considered “too expensive” to receive help. But without a car, how are you supposed to find a job? People are being laid off left and right right now, especially government workers. We need to support them, not punish them for trying to stay afloat.

The process can also be extremely demeaning/demoralizing. Majority of people don’t willingly go through that unless they’re out of other options.
