We did the same. We also told him in elementary school it was ok to avoid a kid on the play ground that has bad behavior. He is now 19 and has never done drugs

I worked in child protective services for a long time. My best unsolicited advice: your children have innocence and ignorance until they don’t. Be the one to lower the veil and teach. So often kids freeze in situations they are put in bc they had no idea in the first place that adult, could do something like that. Or drugs could do something like that. Etc. PARENTS - better you than someone else.

My kid is 6, and my rule is: If you find a pill on the floor and give it to me, I’ll buy you a toy. That stinker has turned in at least 7 pills between my house and my parents’ house over the last year or so.

I teach my kids that there are some people who can’t find peace in themselves so they reach for it in alcohol or drugs.. I teach them this is why it’s so important to talk about how you feel & process big feelings… to tell us when something is bothering them & how we’re always going to be there to help them find their peace in themselves ❤

I started talking to talk to my kids about alcohol, drugs and smoking very early on. About peer pressure and friend bullying.
my kids arent followers, they are leaders and advocates to those who are scared to speak up. Im so proud of them.

Huh. When I went downstairs in the dark to get a drink of water in the middle of the night, my parents would creep behind me, dramatically flip all the lights on and yell “WHERE ARE YOU GOING ARE YOU DOING DRUGS?!?!?!” Scared the shit out of me and I would spill water all over my pajamas. And in all fairness I never did and rarely drink. Take from that what you will 💀

There are too many parents out there that think that their kid would never do this, but if they only saw what their kids say and do behind their back and the social media accounts that they’re able to hide from their parents, they would have this conversation ASAP

My mom told me the truth at a very young age “drugs are fun until they aren’t and then it too late” that and watching what happened to my family members who did drugs I’ve never touched them and never will

Never associate theses things with feelings, because the minute they hit a low point in their lives where they feel like giving up our don’t know how to deal, most likely they will turn to the bad stuff, because you told them that’s what people usually do when they are down. My parents used that on me and it didn’t work. I really like his answer to this, it is mature and it makes a lot of sense.

Working as an Adolescent Counselor the main person to co-sign a child's bad behavior is a parent because "they are are going to do it anyways and I want them to be in a safe space". You just lost all your authority.

5th grade, unfortunately, because I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Just teach them age appropriate information/verbage and be open and honest. It’s other people’s intentions and home environments that surround our kids on a DAILY basis

Sadly, I had to tell my daughter it’s how my best friend died, and why he doesn’t come see her anymore. She gets it.
