Born in 1928 in Enugwu Agidi in present day Anambra State Nigeria he rose from humble beginnings to become the first fully certified cardiothoracic surgeon in Nigeria and the man who led the first successful open heart surgery in Black Africa. Fabian Udekwu began his early academic journey at St Charles Teachers Training College Onitsha where he later became a teacher of mathematics and geography. Ambitious and driven he wrote the London Matriculation exams through correspondence and eventually saved enough money to travel to the United States in 1950 to further his education. In the United States he completed pre medical studies in biology chemistry and physics in Los Angeles. His passion for medicine led him to Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree in 1957. He then trained extensively in general thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Cook County Hospital Chicago where he completed his specialization in 1964. Medical Career and Achievements In 1965 Professor Udekwu returned to Nigeria and joined the University College Hospital Ibadan as a pediatric thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon. The outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in 1967 redirected his expertise to the battlefield where he served as a military surgeon and later held leadership roles in the Biafran Teaching Hospital system. After the war he became a foundational pillar in rebuilding medical education in Eastern Nigeria. At the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu he served as Head of the Department of Surgery and significantly influenced the training of future generations of surgeons. His greatest milestone came in January 1974 when he led the team that successfully performed the first open heart surgery in Black Africa. Under his leadership UNTH Enugu carried out several successful heart surgeries between 1974 and 1980 setting a new standard for medical possibilities in West Africa. Professor Udekwu became a fellow of numerous prestigious medical bodies including the American College of Surgeons the American Association for Thoracic Surgery the International College of Surgeons and the West African College of Surgeons. He was also a founding member of the Nigerian Academy of Science. Personal Life Beyond his brilliant medical mind Fabian Udekwu was a man of many passions. He loved football and tennis and was an active member of the Enugu Sports Club. As a devoted Christian he served as an organist and choirmaster at Holy Ghost Cathedral Enugu. He married Anna Brita Bystrom in 1956 and they were blessed with ten children. Legacy Professor Fabian Udekwu passed away on 17 November 2006 in Uppsala Sweden but his influence continues to inspire African medical practitioners. His pioneering achievements in cardiothoracic surgery transformed healthcare in Nigeria and proved that world class medical procedures could thrive in African environments. He remains a symbol of excellence courage and dedication to service. His life tells the story of a man who refused to accept limitations and instead created history in the field of medicine. #FabianUdekwu #NigerianMedicalHistory #OpenHeartSurgery #AfricanPioneer #UNTHEnugu
