I’m curious about that effect…I can’t remember what it’s called. But it’s how when we get new info we don’t believe it can be true and then goes to “hunh it might be true” and then to “of course it’s true it’s always been true duh it’s obvious”.

They shifted the narrative and repackaged it. Curious to hear more. Check out @CrutchesAndSpice.com|CRIPPLED for their breakdowns.

this is such a great topic and I can see how important it is to stop at/in the 80s while also wanting and needing to keep going until today. I would have a hard time leaving out all of the "today" happenings. Very Fascinating

Is economic development an important but indirect factor? I’m thinking that one effect of eugenics is that it decreases competition for resources for those in favor, but with our large increase in development post-WWII, we no longer felt like we needed to restrict resources in such an unfair & arbitrary method. Did development make us feel like we could make more ethical decisions more easily?

Get cracking! We need your second book about the 90s to today. Like we need it yesterday. Or you could talk about it on here— I’d love to see you make the connections to our current situation

I wonder if there's much work on the rhetorical concept of "a long time ago" as a general form, & the way it's deployed in American culture to distance us from the moral crimes of past generations

I am curious about the impact of the closing of state run institutions and the integration of disabled people into communities. The " we didn't have that diagnosis in my day" we keep hearing was about people being locked away.

My grandmother did her PhD in the late 60’s on self perception of educators who worked with developmentally delayed children. That was her field of work. From some of what I know from her, I think that the perception of people with disabilities changed quite a bit in the baby boom years simply because so many people were born all at once. There was suddenly a critical mass of people with disabilities existing, and slightly more of a network for those parents to provide support for them due to the suburban explosion and the GI bill connecting people through secondary education.

Eugenics was in large part responsible for the Holocaust which was in the 40’s so I’d back it up about a decade.
