i’m a tourist in Jamaica at the moment, all the airports have closed completely. there’s no coming in or out of the island. many of us didn’t choose to stay here but didn’t have a spear 6 grand for flights up to new york and then back home

All these tourists saying the airport is closed, THEY WERE NOT CLOSED UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE!!!! You’re literally the most selfish people in the world. Taking up time and resources that THE PEOPLE OF JAMAICA will need.

Not everyone COULD leave. They’re not “choosing” to stay but flights sold out DAYS ago and how are you supposed to leave if you can’t get a flight? And I say this as a JAMAICAN.

I’m a tourist in Jamaica, when I flew in Friday morning it was still a tropical storm. When it upgraded to a Category 4, the airport was closing that day and the only flights out were $2,000-$5,000. Also not all of us are staying in resorts, and the ones that are, those resorts already planned on having their staff stay there. My fiancée Aunt works at one of the resorts and they have made her stay there to make sure their staff was all safe. And even with me staying in an airbnb, the resort she works at even offered to let me stay there for free. So before you come on here and acts like we’re all selfish pieces of shit, why don’t you actually take a step back and look what was really going on. This storm didn’t turn into a Cat 4 until Saturday, how are you getting thousands of tourists out of a country in less than 24 hours? Because airports were closed Sunday at noon. And the prices for tickets were crazy. We had no choice but to stay.

I just hope that those tourists who decided to stay at least help with cleaning up to repay the locals who still had to serve them in the hotels, instead of being with their families.

The news?! My experience from travelling to the US last month is that there’s a hurricane on the news every day, and we only got a bit of rain for not even an hour. How are you supposed to know when it’s worth spending what may be the very last of your money on overpriced flights to leave? Literally heard potentially catagory 4 and even the locals said ‘this is all the time it’ll be fine’. If I left Florida when there was a hurricane on TV and ‘we will know more in coming days’ (as they kept saying for each hurricane) I’d just never have visited. The news over there seems to feed into drama so when it’s real, how can you differentiate that?

Respectfully - hurricanes can move courses easily. And not everyone has travel insurance to get their hard earned money back that they’ve saved up for a year just to take the vacation. Some tourists were unable to get out. A little grace is a good idea right now. Good vibes to everyone during this time. Locals and tourists.

Please don’t be dense. All the tourists want to leave, but there’s only a cebtrain number of flights per day, meaning not everyone can leave. Some flights were around 2000 per person, meaning the people who definitely don’t have that money can’t afford them. What do you expect people to do?
