@brookeweinstein: as an adult, saying no feels dangerous. Your nervous system interprets disappointing someone as a threat to your survival. The thought of setting a boundary makes your heart race, your throat tight, your stomach drop. Your body is trying to keep you safe the only way it knows how. When you were young and your needs weren't met, or expressing them caused conflict, your nervous system adapted. It decided: "If I just make everyone else happy, I'll be safe. If I'm indispensable, I won't be abandoned." So you became the person who says yes when you mean no. Who gives endlessly even when you're empty. Who prioritizes everyone else's feelings over your own exhaustion. But here's what your nervous system doesn't know yet: You're not that kid anymore. Disappointing someone won't actually threaten your survival. Setting a boundary won't lead to abandonment. Breaking the people-pleasing pattern teaches your nervous system that you can take up space, have needs, AND still be safe. That's regulation work. And it changes everything. #peoplepleasing #boundaries #nervousystem #fawnresponse #burnoutrecovery
