The famous Greek myth of Apollo and Daphne tells the tragic story of unrequited love initiated by the god of love, Cupid (Eros). After Apollo mocked Cupid’s archery skills, Cupid retaliated by shooting Apollo with a gold-tipped arrow that caused him to fall madly in love with the nymph Daphne, and simultaneously striking Daphne with a lead-tipped arrow that instilled in her an instant loathing of love. Apollo pursued Daphne relentlessly, showering her with unwanted declarations, but the nymph desperately fled, determined to preserve her virginity and freedom. Just as the swift god was about to catch her, Daphne cried out to her father, the river god Peneus, for rescue, and her prayer was answered when she was instantly transformed into a laurel tree . Heartbroken, Apollo declared that since she could never be his bride, the laurel would forever be his sacred tree, used to crown poets and victors, thus ensuring that Daphne would be eternally honored but forever out of his reach.
