As a Chicana, I’ve always felt that culture is something sacred something to be honored, not imitated. When it comes to dressing up like Pocahontas, I see it as more than just a costume; it represents a real Indigenous woman whose story and people carry deep pain, resilience, and history.
Culture appreciation means taking the time to understand the roots, the struggles, and the meaning behind traditions and identities not just wearing the surface-level symbols. For me, appreciation looks like learning, respecting, and amplifying Indigenous voices, not turning them into Halloween themes.
As people of color, we know how it feels to have our culture misunderstood or stereotyped. That’s why I believe true appreciation comes with empathy and respect acknowledging the beauty of cultures that aren’t ours while recognizing the responsibility to treat them with care.

Her primary name at birth was Amonute, and her secondary name was Matoaka. Look her up and think again if she should be worn as a costume.

Everyone dresses as different Disney princesses all the time. I don’t see anything wrong with someone dressed up as Pocahontas 🙄

Babe, in 2025 this will/is being interrupted as appropriating; it would be the same as if a white person dressed up as a Mexican indigenous person. This is not the best costume as culture isn’t a shirt you take off or put on.
