What is couture week? Started in France in 1858, it was a way to preserve sewing and fashion as art forms. It has become a top organization on preservation of fashion and sewing techniques, aetliers and courtiers whose work is in danger of fading away. For many many decades it was just open to European designers, but in the past 30-40yrs it has begun to open its membership to other countries, all with the same goal: not letting the foundations of fashion fade away. To be considered couture by the federation, something must be 70% hand sewn. Yes hand sewn and not by machine: whether that’s beadwork, embroideries or in Schiaparelli’s case, the incredible display of padding and pad stitch work. Schiaparelli’s collection this season was inspired by Icarus, and not by the most fabled part we know-flying to close to the sun, but the part where father and son build wings from wax to escape imprisonment. This idea of new and baroque combined to create an escape from the world in his work. That feeling of ‘dress up and escape’ is captured in his use of exaggerated silhouettes (shoulder padding, hip padding) and the opulence of embroideries and enamels. I really enjoyed the collection, the pulls and nods from the 1940s-1960s and thought it was delightful to see all the understructure on display-tailored from top to bottom.
