Teachers have argued with me that spelling is pointless because of technology. I just assumed they thought the same about grammar. We homeschool too.

They don't let teachers TEACH anymore. All they are doing is prepping kids from one standardized test to the next for school district money.

Something I do whenever I grade is if the sentence doesn’t have punctuation or a capital at the beginning they get 1/2 pt per issue. It’s a small bit off but it can add up quick… I teach in college. I also say if I can’t read it due to illegible writing I count it wrong. And still have one student who consistently has handwriting worse than what 1st graders were 20 years ago

I recently helped in a 5th grade classroom and those kids are willfully helpless. They won’t even TRY. I mean I asked them to write the word borax on a cup as part of the science experiment and majority of them said “how do I do that” and the fully meant how do I write on a cup. Because I thought they meant how do I spell borax, and while they also didn’t know that or how to find out how it’s spelled (written out on the instruction sheet they ALL had) they fully meant how do I write a word on a cup with the marker provided. And all the help I tired to give was met with blank stares and then asking me to just do it for them.

I am dyslexic and my spelling and grammar is better than half the people I meet that are my age. I have to correct some of my friends atleast 4 times a day. My friends are mostly 16-18. Yes some of them are younger than me but it’s concerning they got this far with such bad spelling.

English is my third language, and sometimes I feel embarrassed for the way I speak. Then, I see the native English speakers. This spelling and grammar issue is what you get, when you only focus on sciences.

As a writer with a masters in English literature, life in the United States is frustrating. My own mother doesn’t use proper grammar. She always told me “don’t correct your elders”. Okay, well, maybe our elders shouldn’t need to be corrected 😅

someone tried to correct me TODAY, IN PERSON, on how I used the word contiguous. "Don't you kean continental?" No. I actually meant exactly what I said. 😑

The most concerning part for me is that using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation now gets flagged as AI. So we’re essentially being punished for performing above this new standard of acceptable intelligence, which is frighteningly low.

Grammar is not taught or is taught very limitedly because state testing doesn’t require it therefore it gets pushed to the wayside.
