Do you let your dog on the couch? Is it really all that terrible if they are on the couch with you? There is nothing wrong with having your dog on the couch with you if your dog doesn’t have any of these issues; resource guarding, separation anxiety, crating issues, jumping on everyone. The issue is, a lot of humans are really struggling with these issues. Beyond just these issues, is the lack of control we tend to have with our dogs. If your dog cannot exist without being next to you on the couch, and they don’t get off when you tell them it’s time, you should reset this portion of your relationship. I’d personally keep a leash, a short one, on your dog, and when they jump up simply say off, delay a second, and remove them from the couch. You aren’t allowed to get frustrated, as the issue was created by us allowing it in the first place. The good news is, as you start to set, and enforce, this boundary, it becomes a small win that earns you a +1 leadership point. It truly does make it easier to enforce boundaries in other areas of your life as well. This is one of the reasons every time I walk into a clients home, I ask to sit at the kitchen table or counter instead of the couch, because I know I’m going to get bombarded if we sit on the couch. Do you see the connection to jumping, and how and why it’s important to fix it in all instances, not just the front door scenario. I have three dogs. My almost 9 year old Saint Bernard has full access. My 6 year old pittie mix does as well, but I kick him off frequently because he’s a hot box. However, my new rescue puppy won’t be allowed on the couch for some time. He’s in the process of becoming a very confident independent young man, and I want him to continue to learn he doesn’t need me to be content.
