Christmas in Brasov? There’s a moment, just past dusk, when the night loosens its grip and the giant tree, draped in thousands of golden lights and crowned with a white, frost-kissed star, seems to levitate above Council Square like some benevolent cosmic beacon. The whole scene feels deliriously unreal, as if Brasov borrowed a piece of the aurora and strung it between its medieval eaves just to remind winter who truly rules this corner of Transylvania. Beneath that incandescent colossus, the market hums with an almost ecclesiastical fervor. Aromas of scalding vin fiert swirl with the resinous breath of the Carpathians, and the Black Church, brooding and magnificent, absorbs the glow as though feeding on it. Artisans hawk their handiwork, felted wool, carved beechwood, cured mountain cheeses, in stalls that look like pocket-sized sanctuaries to older, slower ways of living. Even the snow seems to fall differently here, drifting in languid spirals, like ash from some ancient festive ritual revived for a modern crowd. And when you step back from it all, letting the cold graze your face like an admonishing elder, something quieter emerges, an intuition that this place, in this season, functions like a hinge between memory and longing. Why does Brasov’s winter feel so unreasonably intimate, so stubbornly haunting? And if you stood under that star again, what wish would you dare to whisper?
