This is the unattractive side of progress. You learn from what doesn’t work and find ways to make it better. Hopefully they can streamline things and find ways to improve.

Sir, while you are also entertaining, I really admire the journalism you put out about Philly. It's always straight forward and usually about something I had no facts about.

You can’t arrest people into sobriety. Consistent counseling is needed. People need to arrive at that decision on their own.

I am grateful for the current success of those 8 to 10 people. Hopefully they will move on in life into success.

Arresting people into forced treatment/sobriety and expecting it to fix the issue is like slapping a bandaid on a flesh wound and expecting it to stop you from bleeding out

As someone whos had family on those exact streets, they have to arrive at that decision on their own. Forced sobriety will never work, you cant help someone who isnt ready

Tranq withdrawal is too intense for most people to go to treatment directly. Some people have already died in custody. Withdrawal can also be a delayed reaction and people could be cleared and then end up in significantly worse condition later. The transitional housing program Riverview Wellness Village that was built is already full. Most people dont have somewhere sustainable to go even if they wanted to go to treatment after. Not everyone can function well in a shelter or recovery house. Forced treatment is not as effective as just housing people long term. We need more Permanent Supportive Housing, and not forced treatment.

I just did a literature review about this for school, mandated treatment largely doesn't work, as people are not in the correct stage of change. However, when paired with harm reduction strategies it is more likely to be successful... eventually.

This is something and a first of its kind. 8-10 people is SOMETHING. Thank you for this. Addiction is a marathon and this a big part in addressing the dire drug epidemic. Also, instead of people just 💩 on this how about we applaud and learn instead? Ok, cool.

You forgot about the Kensington Strangler! The mayor defunded programs that would actually help the people there.
