Catherine was the daughter of Marco Cornaro, a Venetian patrician, and Fiorenza Crispo, granddaughter of Duke Francesco I Crispo of Naxos. In 1457, her father removed her from all positions of power for covering up the embezzlement of her brother, Andrea Cornaro, who was accused of attempting to buy votes for an extraordinary Senate assembly. Andrea then took refuge in Cyprus, where he not only amassed considerable wealth but also advanced substantial sums to Kings John II and James II, who, unable to repay him, became indebted to him.
