@thehypermobiledpt: People always say “locking your knees cuts off your blood flow”. Sure, anyone can pass out from locking their knees for a long time. But it does make me wonder, why do they feel the need to lock their knees to stand still for an hour? As someone who’s studied anatomy and physiology, this is the only explanation that makes sense in my mind. Just my opinion though. Once you start to recognize these associations, it seems so obvious!

the popliteal artery is compresssed when lock kneed. compression cause blood pooling, stress of performance raises blood pressure and those together cause fainting. it’s not dependent on any abnormality. The probability of it happening to someone with a tissue disorder/dysautonomia is higher but it is a generally common occurrence and can happen to anyone

OK, but when I was a freshman at our very first competition, my section leader passed out in front of me during warm-ups and I have not gotten over that 😂

I can't tell you how many times my yoga instructor has scolded me for locking my knees, she doesn't bring up the passing out but she doesn't like it lol. All I know to do is lock them lol. I feel less stable unlocked.

when I was in 3rd grade our teacher had to catch a fellow student from falling off the stage from fainting from locking his knees, I've been traumatized ever since 😂 I had 24 kids in my class, it happens, my high school choir teacher had the same story, it happens 🥰

no...thats not...healthy people will also pass out from locking thier knees because locking your knees restricts your veins and therefore blood flow back up to the brain and heart. did you do any research before saying this? as someone with both hypermobility and dysautonomia, not every single thing that is a symptom of that.

Locked mine hoping to pass out - never happened - turns out it won't if you're hypermobile 😂 (also 40 years of doctors - all idiots)

it's not that locking your knees makes you pass out, it's that bending your knees helps you feel grounded, meaning it's likely to help with feeling light headed, which you can get from singing for like an hour and a half straight at concerts/rehearsals/practice

I'm so glad you're not on my medical team if you're truly a "Dr". 😂 Bc so much can cause passing out/dizziness, not just dysautonomia.....

My dad once told me he had actually prevented himself from passing out by locking his knees during his few minutes off stage during a performance. Admittedly, he was already about to pass out and he was only doing it for short periods of time between when he had to be dancing on stage.
