The Power of Belief: How Self-Efficacy Transforms Recovery What if one belief could predict how well our patients recover — across stroke, chronic pain, surgery, and even aging? That belief is self-efficacy — the confidence in one’s ability to manage challenges and keep moving forward despite them. Here’s what the research shows: 1. In chronic pain, people with higher self-efficacy report less pain interference, lower distress, and better function, even when pain levels stay the same. (Jackson et al., 2014) 2. After stroke, self-efficacy is one of the strongest predictors of recovery. It’s linked with better ADLs, mood, and community reintegration. (Szczepańska-Gieracha et al., 2020; Lo et al., 2022) 3. Following joint replacement, programs that target self-efficacy through graded activity, goal setting, and feedback lead to improved participation and quality of life. (Meng et al., 2022) 4. In older adults, self-efficacy predicts long-term physical activity, independence, and resilience to decline. (McAuley et al., 2011) 5. We can build it. Interventions that emphasize mastery, positive reinforcement, and pain education have been shown to strengthen self-efficacy and lead to functional gains. (Martínez-Calderón et al., 2020) When we help clients believe they can, their brains begin wiring for success. When we believe we can make a difference, our practice becomes more intentional, hopeful, and empowering. Let’s keep building confidence — in our patients and in ourselves. #occupationaltherapy #physicaltherapy #OccupationalTherapyCommunity #healthcareworker #neurorehabilitation
