@kateandherhome: The £10 product that I swear by for upcycles - Rub n Buff! This stuff is magic and the small tube goes a long long way. I've used it to give an antique brass finish on handles, light fixtures and on Christmas decorations. I spray painted these hanging hearts using some black spray paint in a matt finish, before using a small amount of Rub n Buff. Just brush a little bit on and then wipe away the excess using a cloth.
