When my kid says, "I’m not going to school today," I remind myself: this is resistance talking. As adults, we’ve learned how to manage that part of us. That "I don’t want to get out of bed, but I know I’ll feel better once I do," part. Kids don’t yet have that regulation or perspective. So their resistance comes out raw and loud. Our job isn’t to demand emotional maturity they don’t yet have - it’s to recognize the part that’s speaking and help them move through it. For more of my thoughts on back-to-school stress, tune into the Good Inside podcast wherever you like to listen!
Talking about our triggers with our kids takes away their power. It also helps us take small, meaningful steps toward staying calm and connected - and that's so important. This week on the Good Inside podcast we're sharing something usually reserved just for Good Inside Members - a live Q&A where I chat with Senior Good Inside Coach, Jamie Pfeffer. This is such a good episode, I hope you'll tune in. Available wherever you stream (And to watch on YouTube!)
When our kid says, "I had no one to play with," our body can react fast, like it’s scanning our history. Suddenly we're remembering our childhood loneliness, imagining our kid’s whole future, and before we know it, I’m responding to our anxiety, not their reality. In that moment, our job is to pause. To notice what’s ours versus what’s theirs. To come back to today, this recess, this child and lead with connection, not fear. For more on this tune into the Good Inside podcast wherever you like to listen!
