My landlord has been collecting illegal rent increases. Since 2015, he has been charging a 10% rent increase every year. When I told him this goes against the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), he showed me a tribunal document claiming that houses built after 1994 have “autonomous rent increase rights,” meaning they are not bound by the RTA. This is not true. Under the RTA, there is no exemption that allows a landlord to ignore rent-increase guidelines simply because the property was built after 1994. The rent increase rules still apply unless the unit clearly qualifies as not covered by rent control (for example, certain units first occupied after November 15, 2018 not 1994). I am now filing a case with the Landlord and Tenant Board and requesting that all the illegal rent increases charged to me be refunded.

Due to landlords, jacking up the prices of these units… abusing the market prices. They will loose these apartment buildings and homes due to an increase of vacancies. So they will have no one to blame no renters to blame but themselves.

Not sure why all the tenants are upset. If tenants abide by the rules of the rental contract they signed voluntarily , there should not be any issues. If I’m misunderstanding something, tenants please explain.

Pay on-time and a will be ok. Get a lime of credit to bridge delays with psy checks. It's not fair for landlords to be impacted by someone else's financial troubles. It's called accountability.
