When Boeing was flight testing the SP, they made an accidental discovery. The SP could cruise faster than the -100 or -200. It turns out that moving the end of the upper deck hump to its location relative to the wing had an "area rule" advantage in the aerodynamics. Boeing introduced the -300 model, with its extended upper deck, to take advantage of that on the bigger models 😎
