I used to be a stripper and our club relied on the local gang / dealers to protect us rather than the cops

Wasn’t Al Capone loved because he opens up soup kitchens during the depression and got milk expired dates on bottles because his niece or something died from drinking bad milk?

They likely also grew up as hungry kids. Empathy is deeper when you've shared the experience.

My mom’s drug dealer ALWAYS gave me money for a snack and soda whenever he saw me out on the street.

my own dealer cut me off at some point. said I had too much potential to stay in the footsteps of my parents and need to get clean. they are not all bad people just because they are in illegal business

Also, it's good business to take care of the community. A huge part of why organized crime is successful is that they step in and fill vital roles left empty by an uncaring government.

Yup! I’m a therapist and used to work in a scary neighborhood. My clients who were distributors once stopped a would-be mugger before I realized what was happening, pooled money together often so they could help the homeless get their scrips filled, and if asked by a newly sober person, they would not sell to them no matter how often they asked. One even offered to take them to a meeting. These are not the bad guys you see in movies.

I used to deliver food for doordash. if I pulled up to a house in a rich neighborhood I KNEW I was getting stiffed on the tip. poorer neighborhood? I was probably getting a pretty decent tip.

No idea who you are but I appreciate this. I grow up deep in drug culture and honestly I think it's why I'm so empathetic towards those struggling. I've seen what bottom of the barrel living is like. Drug Dealers aren't bad people, Drug Addicts aren't bad people. They've just come from a bad place.

Very true. Also true, many BIPOC creators have said so. Could we amplify their voices instead of saying what they said without giving them credit? That would seem to be more ethical when one is white and has a good sized platform?
