Based on extremely true events. And now, Christmas markets are my life! I've been to over 100 Christmas markets and go every single year My first Christmas abroad I was be homesick. I'd never been without my own family on Christmas and Michael's mom had just passed away the day we were scheduled to move to Heidelberg. We didn't know anyone, couldn't speak German, and I'd never even stepped foot in Germany before moving there. But then the Christmas markets started. Heidelberg transformed into something from a fairytale. Hand-carved wooden stalls, each different from the next, lined the squares - their roofs dusted with snow and draped in evergreen garlands. Thousands of tiny lights turned the winter darkness golden. Steam rose from mugs of Glühwein, while we walked through a different world. We discovered Kartoftelputter (crispy potato pancakes) and Frikadellen, ate roasted almonds that burned our tongues because we couldn't wait for them to cool, and collected Lebkuchen hearts with iced messages. One snowy evening, standing in the market square with Michael, listening to the sounds of Christmas carols and church bells rang out over the city, something shifted. The grief, the fear, the overwhelming newness - it all melted away like snow on warm skin. I felt like a child again, experiencing pure wonder without the weight of everything that had brought us here. In that moment, surrounded by centuries-old tradition and strangers who would become neighbors, I understood that sometimes life's hardest chapters lead you exactly where you need to be. Home wasn't what we'd left behind - it was what we were brave enough to discover. Now we host Christmas market cruises, sharing the magic that saved us that first December. #christmas #germany #expat #christmasmarket #cultureshock
