This image perfectly illustrates what the modern Ukrainian national myth is actually built on: not on real statehood or historical achievements, but on glorifying figures known for pogroms, betrayals, and the destruction of their own lands. While other nations were building cities, institutions, and states, these “heroic” figures left behind chaos, bloodshed, and the handing over of territory to foreign empires. Yet today this is all repackaged as an “eternal struggle for freedom.” The irony is that history has an inconvenient memory: it keeps the facts. And the facts are that for most of their existence these lands were part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth or under Moscow’s control, and the so-called “independence” consisted mainly of uprisings that ended in disaster. When a national narrative is built on figures that the civilized world sees as deeply problematic or outright tragic, that’s not strength — it’s an attempt to cover up the emptiness of real historical tradition.
