WR 102 is a rare type of star called an oxygen-sequence Wolf–Rayet star (WO2). There are only four of these stars in the Milky Way and nine in other galaxies. It is one of the hottest stars known, with a surface temperature of about 210,000 K. Its brightness is estimated to be about 95,500 times that of the Sun based on atmospheric models, or up to 380,000 times brighter if calculated using its distance (2,900 ± 200 parsecs) and temperature. WR 102 likely formed in the Sagittarius OB5 star group. It is very compact and dense, with a radius about half that of the Sun (0.52 R☉) but 16 times its mass (16.1 M☉). The star has extremely strong stellar winds, blowing at speeds of 5,000 kilometers per second, which cause it to lose about 10⁻⁵ solar masses per year. For comparison, the Sun loses only (2–3) x 10⁻¹⁴ solar masses per year, making WR 102’s mass loss millions of times greater. These intense winds and ultraviolet radiation have shaped the surrounding interstellar material into an intricate nebula of arcs, known as a bubble-type Wolf–Rayet nebula.
