Marriage has existed way before capitalism and way before the United States. Its benefits for personal growth, child rearing, and society in general are beyond measure. Not everyone should do it but if done correctly the world is better for it. I agree with you that it should not be a legal issue and state sanctioned marriage is a fairly new concept in the us. I heard with ties to Jim Crowe laws to keep blacks from marrying whites.
