I always wonder what it is that’s REALLY making them emotional. What did they do, or what did someone do to them to make them react this way from a few generally comforting words. Did they hurt, steal, lie, cheat, etc. usually they get so worked up at the thought of forgiveness bc they’ve done something they don’t feel is redeemable in anyone else’s eyes other than an all knowing and all forgiving god. I grew up in the Mormon church and have had two decades to ponder this. I’ve realized from a young age that religion is a coping mechanism at its root.

When you really deconstruct biblical teachings, you start to see how much of it has been twisted into a performance—fire, brimstone, threats, theatrics. A whole stage play built to scare people into obedience. But a righteous God wouldn’t condemn what He created. He wouldn’t weaponize fear against the very humanity He formed. So when people preach or ‘prophesy’ doom, it doesn’t land as holy—it lands as performative, unkind, and honestly… a little weird. I don’t subscribe to that cage.
