@nxthompson: Six takeaways from my lunch today with Sam Altman, including his latest views on OpenAI's competition, progress in explainability, risks in income inequality, and why the devices of the future will be running AI locally, not in the cloud.

As a longterm ChatGPT user, I agree with the memory making it harder to move to Gemini, but it doesn’t mean the transition won’t happen. I am slowly working my way over to Gemini now.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Not sure I agree on the moat. It had me for a little bit, but switched and it wasn’t really noticeable.

my guess, the new hardware device to run locally is about androids

The dangerous thing doesn’t make sense when you realize that “explainability” is potentially just a bunch of after the fact rationalizations a.k.a. lies that the model can say.

He’s also trying to frame the ‘who wins the future’ in a way that eliminates Google.

People don’t react favorably to AI because it’s not better. It’s cheaper and faster. However, it will eventually be better, and customized to the end user’s liking. It’s just a matter of time before AI is preferred in almost all scenarios.

Memory is not their moat. Can easily plug in a memory MCP and carry it with me from model to model. Completely provider agnostic.

He’s marketing. Not telling you the truth. See Musk and all his broken promises about what Tesla would deliver.

I’m baffled by the “synthetic data as corpus” mode of training. How is this not like trying to pick yourself up by your bootstraps? Forget the eventual mad cow problems — I don’t understand how it can create /any/ improvement since the synthetic data exists as potential in the original model. Why doesn’t the original model just use it directly?

the cloud will evaporate. the internet will balkanize. cloud providers can’t be trusted. Infrastructure costs will come down and corps will all run their own on prem.

Some of us have had some weird experiences with AI and it's gonna get harder to convince us to trust it. I asked if there were any Marriotts near the Vienna main train station. AI created one and even told me about the statues in the lobby. It didn't exist. When I pointed out I couldn't find it on Google maps, it agreed it didn't exist, and then created another fake one 😵‍💫

Yawn. That overhang is excellent spin because there is a lot of reporting that AI has not had the business impact it promised. Also, Google has been working on local intelligence for at least a decade (see federated learning).

How can there be a model trained totally on synthetic data. How could that model tell me anything about the Battle of Waterloo?

1. They are also not measuring the impact 2. The pay gap is already there
