An endangered gay penguin couple at the UK’s Chester Zoo have become proud dads after hatching and raising a baby chick. Chester Zoo’s famous same-sex penguin pair, Scampi and Flounder, became proud adoptive dads in April after stepping in to help raise one of two eggs laid by another couple, Wotsit and Peach. The chick is one of 10 adorable new arrivals in the zoo’s 63-strong Humboldt colony. Experts carefully divided the eggs between two nests to give both chicks the best possible start in life. In what’s being described by zookeepers as a “bumper year for penguins,” the chicks began hatching between April 16 and 28, and have spent their first few weeks tucked safely in nest burrows. The newest addition is said to be doing well and just days away from taking to the water for the very first time. Native to the rocky coastal shores of Peru and Chile Humboldt penguins are among the most at-risk of the world’s 17 penguin species. They face mounting threats including climate change, overfishing, and rising ocean temperatures, and are currently listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). But with devoted dads like Scampi and Flounder stepping in to raise the next generation, there is hope for the future of this vulnerable species. Zookeepers say the fluffy new arrivals are “being looked after brilliantly by their parents and have nearly quadrupled in size since they first emerged!” #humboldt #penguins #chesterzoo #gay #endangeredspecies #lgbtqia
